Sesame Ginger Orange Chicken Salad. With lots and lots of crispy, salty, fried wontons. This yummy Asian-inspired salad is a mix of fresh greens, chicken, juicy sweet oranges, creamy avocado, and delicious crunchy nuts, all topped with those crispy wontons. Everything is tossed together with my favorite toasted sesame and ginger salad dressing. I know you’ll find it delicious. This salad is a wonderful mix of savory, sweet, and salty. It’s no-cook, fast, easy to toss together, bright and colorful, plus, of course, totally delicious!
It’s been a minute since I shared a bright and fresh colorful salad. I thought this salad would be perfect to break up all the cozy soups and pasta. It’s all about having a nice balance!
As I work away on this post, I’m in New York, but once this post goes live, I’ll be home and back in the kitchen. After a week of eating out, I could not be more excited to cook for myself again. It’s cold here, so I’m still craving warming foods, but adding a bright salad to the mix is a must.
Especially one loaded with so much vitamin C!
I’ve wanted to make an orange chicken salad for a while now. Whenever I head to a Chinese restaurant, it’s always the first thing I order. I’ve always enjoyed the savory, sweet, tangy, and salty flavors.
I hesitated because I wasn’t sure how to make the salad feel like my own. But then, I started making fried wontons for my brother Red over the holidays. Ever since I’ve been regularly adding them to so many recipes. I’m loving them!
Obviously, an orange chicken salad is the perfect fit for homemade crispy wontons!
I like to start with the dressing. It’s a mix of sesame oil, toasted sesame oil, honey, tamari, fresh ginger, garlic, orange zest, and toasted sesame seeds.
Honestly, this has become one of my favorite dressings. The toasted oil, honey, and tamari make it lick-the-spoon-good. And the ginger gives it a nice spicy yet fresh kick. If you love any of my Asian sauces, you’ll enjoy this!
The wontons are incredibly easy to make. All you need are oil and wonton wrappers. I love to use avocado oil when frying.
Cut the wonton wrappers into strips, then do a shallow fry in the oil until crisp. It only takes a minute and is super easy. Then I’ll usually sprinkle them with flaky salt.
And on to the actual salad…cabbage, greens, chicken, fresh oranges, avocado, and lots of dressing. The dressing really is key, it’s what brings in all the flavor. Then finish the salad with so many of those fried wontons, they are delicious!
If you’re looking to switch up your chicken salad, this is a great option for lunch or dinner! Enjoy this salad on its own or try serving it with your favorite dumpling soup or some Sesame Ginger Dumplings. Yum!

Made this tonight. I used crunchy noodles instead of wontons to save time. The whole family loved it. Could drink the dressing. Thanks. X
Thanks so much for making this recipe, Shari! Love to hear that it was enjoyed:) Have a great week! xT
`Everyone loves this recipe! It’s a staple in our house!
Hey Wendy,
Thanks so much! I appreciate you making this recipe so often and your feedback, so glad it is always a hit! Xx
Thanks for the recipe! A few questions that I don’t see addressed in the recipe:
– only 1/2 of the dressing is spoken to, when is the 2nd half added?
– how much oil for frying? Not familiar with frying at all so guidance would be so awesome
– recipe just lists “shredded chicken” … are there any spices or link to a staple shredded chicken recipe you can share? I normally cook in crockpot with chicken broth and spices but I’m thinking a different flavor profile would be so much better. I need your expertise help pretty please 🥰🥰
Hi Tabitha,
You can use the other half of the dressing as needed for serving:) I would coat the bottom of your skillet with oil for frying the wonton strips. Typically I just get a rotisserie chicken and shred that or I bake chicken breasts in soy sauce, sesame seeds, and olive oil. I hope this helps! Let me know if you give this recipe a try! xT
This one is so yummy, and we’ve been making it since it came out! We’ve made one change that has been a game changer! Make extra dressing to marinate chicken breast in, then grill the chicken. The chicken has so much flavor and elevates the meal!
Hey Emily,
Happy Monday! So glad to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for giving it a try! Xx
This is such a good salad recipe. My grocery store sells the wonton strips pre-fried in the bulk section, which makes this an even quicker dinner. I used some leftover chicken from your Hawaiian Tequila Chicken salad and mixed it with shredded rotisserie chicken. I also quickly toasted the almonds in my air fryer. The dressing is really what makes this salad come together, bursting with ginger & citrus zest. This is going on our salad rotation. Excellent!
Hey Lindsey,
Happy Sunday!! Thanks so much for making this recipe and your comment, so glad to hear it was enjoyed! xT
Wondering if the wonton strips can be made ahead of time?
Hey Megan,
Of course, just keep them in an airtight container so they stay crispy. I hope you love this recipe! xT
How long will the Salad Dressing last?
Hey Francine,
The dressing is good for 1 week in the fridge. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xT
This is spoon fork bacon’s recipe. You really just rip everyone off huh? No integrity. It’s sad.
Can you tell me estimated measurements + ingredients for the chicken and temp to cook the chicken at? Just want it to come out like yours. Please and thanks! I’m devoted to your recipes 🫶🏻🙌🏻
Hey Destiny,
I just did some soy sauce, honey, and sesame seeds and baked at 350F for 30 minutes. I hope you love this recipe! xT
Is there a substitute for sesame oil?
Hi Jamie,
Sorry, you are really going to want both the sesame oil and toasted sesame oil for this recipe. Please let me know if I can help in any other way! xT
Delicious! The wonton strips were a bit of a pain, however. Very tedious to separate the strips to fry. A whole package of wonton wrappers is waaay too much. I used 3 wrappers and there were still plenty for leftovers the next day. Thanks for your great inspirational recipes~!
Hi Cass,
Thanks a lot for trying this recipe and your feedback! So glad it was enjoyed:) So sorry about the wonton strips! Xx
The dressing is delicious!
Thanks so much Shannon!!
Looks delicious…Can’t wait to try it! Question, the picture of the dressing looks like it has jalapeno’s in it, but no jalapenos in the ingredient list
Thanks so much Michaele! I did add some jalapeños for extra heat, totally optional! I hope you love this recipe! xT
