Baked Maple Bacon Glazed Doughnuts made with a mix of maple, vanilla, spices, and whole wheat flour. Then baked and dipped in a sweet maple glaze made with butter, real maple syrup, and vanilla. Top each doughnut with extra crispy-salty bacon. Don’t give in to your skepticism, the combination of salty to sweet is so delicious. If you’re doubting this, you just have to try it! The true secret is in the quality of maple syrup and bacon you pick up from the store. Be sure to use only the highest quality. These doughnuts are the perfect way to make any day fun, happy, and delicious!

Alright, so hear me out. I know the idea of these doughnuts sounds interesting. You may be wondering if maple doughnuts and bacon are really the yummiest combination. But you need to put any thoughts of doubt aside. We already know that maple and bacon together is a delicious combination. So adding bacon to an already delicious maple doughnut really isn’t a huge leap.

I hesitated to test this recipe for a while. But after finally giving the doughnut a try, I knew I wanted to share the recipe.

I used my maple doughnuts as a base and then added bacon as a topping. Such a simple, but yummy addition.

The only place I know of personally that offers a bacon doughnut is Voodoo Doughnuts. They have a location in the Denver airport, and I know so many people adore that doughnut!

I’m hoping you all can get behind this fun doughnut, too. My mom was excited and very into the idea. She loved the way they turned out.

These are the details

Step 1: the bacon

Before you begin, you should start cooking the bacon. I actually love to bake the bacon instead of pan-frying. It’s much easier to make a big batch of bacon and a lot less messy.

Bake the bacon on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a 400-degree oven until it’s super crispy. I recommend using high-quality bacon for the best flavor, I usually pick up uncured bacon from Whole Foods. Something thicker cut and without added sugar is best.

Step 2: make the doughnut batter

Since we’re all embracing healthier eating for the start of the new year, I knew I wanted to make these a little more wholesome than most doughnuts.

Frying was out of the picture, for sure. I never mess with that. But for the batter, I tried to keep with wholesome ingredients. For the wet ingredients: melted coconut oil, vanilla, eggs, real maple syrup, and milk. I always use whole milk, but use what you drink at home.

Step 3: the dry ingredients

Now, for the dry ingredients: whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt.

The warm spices really complement the salty bacon. No fancy ingredients, and hopefully all ingredients you already have in your pantry.

Step 4: bake the doughnuts

Ok, time to bake!

Divide the batter between doughnut pans (or use cupcake pans). As the doughnuts bake, the kitchen will start to smell like sweet maple or maybe even maple and bacon if you’re also baking up the bacon at the same time.

It’s one of the yummiest scents. Reminds me of a homey Sunday morning breakfast.

Step 5: the glaze

The glaze was the reason I really wanted to make these doughnuts. I love a maple-glazed doughnut. I find them to be one of those doughnuts people often ignore, so I wanted to highlight them!

The glaze is pretty simple, butter, real maple syrup, powdered sugar, and plenty of vanilla.

Not too strong, not too sweet, but just right. Especially when dipped into or drizzled over warm maple doughnuts.

Delicious!

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Grease a 6-cup doughnut pan or 12-cup muffin pan with melted butter
    2. In a mixing bowl, stir together the coconut oil, eggs, vanilla, maple syrup, and milk until combined. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt, mix until just combined.
    3. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pan, filling 1/2-2/3 of the way full. Bake 12-13 minutes, until just set. Remove and let cool 5 minutes, then run a knife around the edges to release and invert the pan.
    4. Meanwhile, make the glaze. Add the butter to a small pot set over medium heat. Allow the butter to brown slightly until it smells toasted, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the maple syrup, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Dip or drizzle the doughnuts into the glaze. Let set 2-3 minutes, then add a slice or 2 of bacon on top.

These were good. The glaze is the star. I skipped the bacon. Also a bonus that it was easy to make and all ingredients but the cardamom I had in the pantry.

  2. BEST DONUTS IVE EVER HAD!!! Slightly embarrassed to admit this but made a half batch for me and the mans and we killed all 6 in one day. They were perfection. Enjoyed the texture and fluffiness and taste way more than any store/bakery bought donut… way too excited about this. Followed the recipe as is. 12 minutes was perfect. Thank you once again T!

They taste incredible BUT I’m a little annoyed the instructions didn’t include to bake the bacon FIRST before doing anything else. I ended up realizing once the donuts were in and the glaze was done that I still had to do that. The glaze ended up getting all grainy cause it sat while I cooked the bacon.

    1. Hi Ariana,
Thanks a lot for trying this recipe, I love to hear that it turned out well! Sorry for any confusion, but the ingredients call for cooked bacon:) Happy Sunday! xT

There was a time I though bacon with something sweet was WEIRD but then I discovered the joy of maple syrup served over bacon and pancakes and my mind was changed. So, suffice it to say… I haven’t made this yet but it is making my mouth water, and I will!!

I had already made the Brown Butter Maple Donuts, and adding bacon only makes them better (obviously)! Ive used all-purpose every time, but wondering if you think it would work with a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour? Have some loved ones that can’t partake, as is.

    1. Hey Becca,
So glad you have been enjoying the doughnut recipes:) I think gluten free flour should work well for you too! Let me know if you give it a try! xT

  6. We are not dessert eaters and I prefer cooking to baking, but this one caught my attention, so I’m in! Would this work with AP flour? I LOVE your recipes, and can’t wait to try this one. Thank you!!

    1. Thanks so much Susan:) Yes, you can use an equal amount of all purpose flour. I hope you love these doughnuts! xT

I have made maple bacon glaze donuts before, and I now tried your version, just because I love to make donuts. Seriously good recipe, and it came out great. I’m rolling in the aisles about all the bat-shittery from the triggered tr@lls over this recipe. It’s really funny. They have a meltdown about everything you do, granted, (bless their hearts) but this is special. Enjoying just watching.
